Police are investigating how a 37-year-old Australian tourist came to be lying on the road before she was hit by a car near Bluff on Monday.
The woman was found dead on State Highway 1 between Bluff and Invercargill about 1am.
Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy said a Bluff driver alerted police after hitting the woman - but police have not ruled out the possibility that the victim was already dead.
An investigation into who caused her death was continuing, Mr McCloy said.
"She was hit whilst lying on the road by a Bluff resident," he said.
