The New Zealand Blood Service plans to add late-night and Saturday morning collections to its schedule to counter the drop in donors because of illness.
National donor manager Tony Smith said that around 20 per cent of people who wanted to donate blood this month had been turned away because of sore throats or colds.
More donors, especially those with blood type O, were urgently needed to offset the drop.
