A New Zealand study into the links between air travel and fatal blood clots - possibly the world's most comprehensive study yet - has been approved and will begin by the end of May.
About 1000 volunteers will be needed for the study, which will be conducted by doctors from Green Lane and Wellington Hospitals.
It aims to find out exactly who is in danger of developing economy class syndrome and why.
A British study already completed and an Australian one due to start have targeted a smaller number of people. Both looked at travellers only after their long-haul flights.
The New Zealand project is being headed by Dr Rodney Hughes, a senior respiratory registrar at Green Lane.
It will cost about $250,000.
