Police say results from a blitz in Wellington overnight make them hopeful the drink drive message is finally getting through.
More than 1500 vehicles were stopped and nine drivers will face drink drive charges.
Police said 16 vehicles were impounded for fine payment defaults and driving offences and one driver was caught travelling 154km/h in a 100km/h area approaching the checkpoint.
Another driver stopped short of the checkpoint and reversed back up the road into oncoming traffic.
