Police in Blenheim are appealing for information from the public after a pig was tortured with what was believed to have been a blowtorch.
The 250kg sow was euthanased after being found last Sunday with burns to almost the entire back half of her body.
Bread was found in the sow's pen, indicating that those responsible had lured her to them before the torture.
Rivernook Piggery manager Al Humphreys said the attack happened between Friday afternoon and Sunday.
He said the attackers would have had to climb a fence to get to the pen.
"I'd like to know why they did it, what sort of mentality they have, what sort of kick you get from doing something like that," Mr Humphreys said.
A police spokesman from Blenheim police said no witnesses to the attack had so come forward.
The offender would most likely face a charge of cruelty to an animal, the spokesman said.
