Firefighters could not save Hastings Intermediate's school hall from being destroyed in a blaze last night.
However, they were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent administration building.
Fire Service spokesman Toby Acheson said the fire started about 6.30pm at the school in the suburb of Akina.
He said the 10m-by-30m hall was well ablaze when fire crews arrived and extra resources from outside Hastings were brought in to assist.
"It became quite large quite quickly," he said.
Firefighters had contained the blaze by 7.40pm.
It was unclear what caused the fire.
No injuries were reported.
