Fire fighters are at the scene of a blaze in Cathedral Square in Christchurch. Six fire trucks were called to the scene, about 12.23pm, southern fire communications shift manager Brent Dunn said.
He said fire service initially believed the roof of a building, near the old Bank of New Zealand building in Cathedral Square, was on fire.
However, upon arrival, fire fighters discovered an old couch was on fire, he said.
Mr Dunn could not comment as to whether or not the cause of the fire was suspicious. He said the blaze was now under control, and no one was injured.
