Targeting black spots has cut fatal crashes by half and reduced injury crashes by a third at those sites, says the Land Transport Safety Authority.
Its figures come from a study of 2366 sites where engineering improvements have been made. The LTSA, local authorities and Transit New Zealand run the crash reduction programme, which started in 1985.
The study, based on figures to August 31 last year, estimates that low-cost roadworks and other measures at the sites prevented more than 7100 injury crashes.
