Coach of the world championship-winning New Zealand Black Sox men's softball team, Don Tricker, will be guest speaker at the 2004 Wairarapa sports awards function to be held in Masterton tomorrow night.
Tricker played for the Black Sox himself from 1987 to 1991 and was part of the side which won the silver medal at the 1988 world series.
In 1998 Tricker was appointed head coach of the Black Sox and led the team to success at the 2000 world champs, a feat they repeated under Tricker in Christchurch earlier this year.
The Wairarapa sports awards, which are sponsored by the Wairarapa Times-Age, have four separate cateogries.
Finalists for the Senior Sports Personality award are Daniel Juno (hockey), Elizabeth Perry (hockey and cricket), Gordon Pye (kick boxing) and Stu Smith (rugby) and for the Junior Sports Personality of the Year award ,Liam Burling (rugby), Kirk Collins (tennis and badminton), Bjarne Frederiksen (motocross) and Lisa Hansen (swimming).
Contending for the Sports Administrator of the Year award are Ron Hughes (athletics and rugby), Graeme Morris (petanque), Loraine Somerville (Netball) and Andy Wilson (hockey) while the finalists for the Sports Team of the Year are the Dalefield women's hockey team, the St Matthew's Collegiate girls netball team, the Wairarapa under-15 girls netball team and the Wairarapa-Bush rugby team.
