As for the rest of the week, most parts of the country would get showers as a series of fronts hit the country.
The first is to hit Northland and Auckland this evening, before it travels down Coromandel Peninsula and through Waikato to Taranaki.
Lee said it will hit Wellington and drop showers to Manawatu, Whanganui and Taihape along the way.
It means a likely showery Queen's Birthday Weekend and temperatures that will slowly cool as the week progresses.
Auckland was on 13.4C and will get a high of 17C today, but its high will only be 13C by Monday. Its wettest day will be Friday and sunniest expected to be Monday.
Hamilton will get to 16C today, showers tonight before rain hits on Friday. The sun will finally arrive on Sunday and Monday.
It will reach 15C in Wellington today and be clear tomorrow but also wet on Friday with a high of 13C. Showers will plague the area all weekend.
Christchurch has a high of 14C today and will experience showery weather all week before temperatures drop to 12C on Thursday and 10C by Sunday.
Dunedin had a bit of early cloud and will again be cloudy tomorrow but will be fine for the start of the long weekend on Friday, showery and 12C on Saturday before dropping to 9C on Sunday but fining up on Monday.
