Ashburton Police are warning the public to take extreme care on the roads in the Canterbury region due to reports of black ice.
The area between Dunsandel and Ashburton on State Highway 1 was particularly bad and crashes had already occurred, police said.
Other roads could be similarly affected and the public are advised by police to be careful with their speed and following distances.
