Fatal accidents at Haast and at the Waitaki River Bridge have made Monday a day of horror on South Island roads which left four dead and two injured.
Two women died in a head on collision between a car and a logging truck at the Waitaki bridge on State Highway 1 in the South Island about 10.45 am.
Two people - visitors from the United States - also died when the car they were in lost control and ended up in the Haast River about 4.30 pm.
The two women killed in the collision at the Waitaki Bridge were in the car.
The driver of the truck was taken to hospital for treatment, said Inspector Warren Kemp of the police's Southern Communication Centre.
The names of the two dead women were unlikely to be released until tomorrow at the earliest.
Police, fire, and ambulance staff dealt with the crash which closed the bridge and the road.
The bridge was still closed at 5.30 pm.
Those killed in the accident near Haast township were a 65 year old man and a 52 year old woman.
There was one survivor, a 28 year old woman, also from the United States.
All three were related, but Christchurch Police said no names would be released at this stage.
