Legislation tightening controls on access to births, deaths and marriages records could make it more difficult to carry out genealogical research, some MPs say.
The bill, aimed at preventing fraudulent use of the information for things such as identity theft, has passed its first hurdle and will now be considered by a select committee.
National MPs and independent MP Taito Phillip Field opposed the Births, Deaths, Marriages and Relationships Registration Amendment Bill. United Future leader Peter Dunne said his party held several concerns over its current form. Further support would depend on the select committee amending the bill.
