Labour MP Darien Fenton has lodged a private member's bill providing minimum notice and redundancy compensation for people who lose their jobs.
Ms Fenton says her legislation is based on the recommendations of a report by the public advisory group on restructuring and redundancy.
Tens of thousands of people have no redundancy entitlement in collective agreements, she says, and such provisions are particularly important as the recession continues to make jobs unstable.
The Labour Party is also considering Australia's General Employee Entitlements and Redundancy Scheme, which provides a basic payment for unpaid entitlements in situations of insolvency.
