Portraits of the country's political leaders have copped torrents of abuse from aggressive Trade Me users.

A watercolour painting of Bill English looking a bit like a James Bond character was greeted with a huge amount of backlash from those with differing political opinions. Commenters insulted the leader's looks, suggested it should be put in the rubbish or one mentioned they would buy the "artless painting so I can smear my s*** on it and return it to sender".

Bloke2 posted his disgust at the piece of art made by Wellington artist Sarah Usher.

"Hideous on all levels. Embarrassingly poorly executed 'painting' of a liar. If you buy this junk and hang it, it'll say more about you than you might imagine. Is that not so?"

While others decided to descend to potty talk.

"Be nice on my toilet wall..would help when I'm constipated.. Nice art skills though," one person posted.

Others found amusement in the large amount of vitriol the portrait had attracted.

Rb-nz posted "hahahahahahahaha look at all the salty labour supporters".

But English wasn't the only one copping hate. Labour leader Jacinda Ardern has her own portrait going under the hammer by another artist, this time with her face in the place of the subject in the famous The Scream painting, perhaps influenced by the tight election results. The original sold for $120 million in 2012.

Bidders could see the humour in the picture, one suggesting Te Papa should "snap it up while it's cheap".

"Awesome I really think this is an investment piece. 'iconic Kiwi humour art at its best circa 2017' could be the auction catalogue discription. Come on Te Papa snap it up while it's cheap."

Others asked for adjustments to the oil on canvas piece, listed by trader original.art: "If I win can you make the teeth bigger?". The artist responded with a yes.

The same artist has also listed a version of Bill English in the style of Van Gogh self portrait.

And it seems Trade Me artists have not exhausted the demand for political inspired art with one user making a special request.

"I have a friend that's really into David Seymour. Could I request a painting of him please?"
