KEY POINTS:
A 15-year-old motorcyclist involved in a fatal crash on a Northland beach will meet the parents of the teenager who died.
Nikita Kneebone collided with two 13-year-old girls on New Year's Eve, killing Daisy Fernandez and seriously injuring Claudia Billinge.
He was riding his unregistered Yamaha on Ripiro Beach, near Glinks Gully.
The Dargaville High School student will meet the families of both girls at a Child Youth and Family conference. Depending on the outcome, he could face Youth Court charges of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing injury.
Sergeant Jonathan Tier, of Dargaville police, said conferences were common, and only murder or manslaughter cases involving youths went straight to court.
"It's similar to a restorative justice meeting to make the kids accountable for what they've done," Tier said. "The boy is a mess. He doesn't know what to do."
Fernandez's parents, Billinge and Kneebone did not return calls. But in an earlier interview with the Herald on Sunday, Kneebone's mother, Tina Bates, said he was prepared to go to jail.
She believed it was inevitable they would meet the Fernandez family but were not sure what to say.
Daisy's parents, Craig and Sandi, previously told the Herald on Sunday they had no wish to meet Kneebone.
Claudia is recovering well from her injuries, which included a broken right fibia, a shattered pelvis and the loss of part of her right kneecap.
