A cyclist who suffered serious head and spinal injuries after a pile-up in one of New Zealand's toughest races is recovering well.
Brett Burton, 43, of Auckland, was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital after being left crumpled on the road during last Saturday's Coromandel Peninsula K2 race.
Competitors told the Herald on Sunday the incident occurred when an "impatient" ute driver tried to overtake a pack of riders on a blind corner and a milk truck came from the opposite direction.
Burton, an Auckland bike salesman, was moved on Monday from the intensive care unit to a general ward. Through a spokesman, his wife Tarryn said he was in a stable condition and "recovering well".
The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident. No charges have been laid.
