Bike Wise Week is officially under way, a nationwide campaign to get more people out cycling.
The latest data from the Ministry of Transport's household travel survey shows there are 1.3 million cyclists in New Zealand. According to figures from the Bicycle Industry Association and Land Transport New Zealand, cycle imports outstripped first-time car registrations last year.
There were more than 246,000 bike imports, compared with 197,000 car registrations.
