The speculation in Thames over who won last week's Big Wednesday $3 million prize has finally been laid to rest.
The locals, who wish to remain anonymous, said they had no idea they had won the prize until they checked their ticket at the weekend.
The ticket had been a bonus free ticket.
It is the third Big Wednesday first division prize won in the town.
The winners said they knew the Big Wednesday ticket had been won locally but didn't think it was them.
"We were in the Courts Take Note shop in Thames at the weekend to buy our regular Saturday Lotto ticket and thought we should check our bonus free ticket from Big Wednesday.
"We were overwhelmed to the point of tears when we found we had won the big prize," they said.
NZ Lotteries chief executive Todd McLeay said the lucky locals had scored a $2,994,390 prize package, which included an Aston Martin Vantage, a $250,000 American Express Platinum card, $250,000 of first class travel and a boat.
