A deep and sizeable quake that struck off the coast of cyclone-stricken Vanuatu is no tsunami threat to New Zealand.
The 6.8 magnitude quake hit 175km deep and about 14km south of the Pacific Island nation at 1.52am today.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre confirmed there was no tsunami threat due to the quake.
Cyclone Donna has been hammering the area in recent days with strong winds and heavy rain pelting the area.
Donna was the strongest cyclone to be recorded in the South Pacific in the month of May, which is outside the usual cyclone season, which ends on April 30.
