Wairarapa could be represented by more than 50 athletes at the North Island secondary schools track and field championships on the new all-weather track at the Colin Pugh Sports Bowl in Masterton on April 5 and 6.
Masterton-based coach Mark Harris said some 70 youngsters from the region had been identified as having the ability to compete at that level. It was likely most of them would participate at the meet where there could as many as 600 entrants.
"We'd like to think the drop-out rate will be quite small and we'd have over 50 there," said Harris. "It's a huge opportunity for our youngsters to contest a major competition at home and you'd expect most of them to take advantage of it."
Several Wairarapa competitors took part in the Wellington secondary schools championships a Newtown Park with many of them featuring among the medal winners.
