KEY POINTS:
A large earthquake struck deep underground near Turangi early this afternoon.
The GeoNet website reported the magnitude 5.8 earthquake was centred 10km southeast of the central North Island town at a depth of 80km. It struck at 1.21pm.
It was felt thoughout the central North Island and as far south as the Kapiti Coast.
