KEY POINTS:
An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale has struck off the Southland coast.
GNS Science said the quake hit at 11.34am and was centred 430km south-west of Invercargill, at a depth of 12km.
It was felt in Queenstown, and likely to have been felt throughout the bottom of the South Island.
No tsunami warning had been issued.
