Big league here we come

White Swan Greytown have won the Wairarapa football championship division one title and secured promotion to the Capital league.

They headed the competition table all season and were guaranteed the major spoils with three games still to play.

Greytown Football Club chairman Paul Southey was understandably delighted at the success.

"This is an amazing achievement for us, especially when you consider we were only established in 2008," he said.

"We have been building for this, and we are delighted to win promotion and lay the platform for future Greytown players to play at the highest level."

Head coach James Hodgson was equally jubilant.

"I'm over the moon with the season and really proud of the team and the club.

"Winning the league was our goal from the start, and we have been working hard, both on and off the pitch, to make it a reality."

Manager Tu Hayes said winning promotion was an "amazing feeling" and said the aim now was to raise funds and join the Capital league.

Hayes is particularly keen to develop opportunities for younger players who are hoping to play at a higher level in the near future.

With this in mind the club, alongside a continued involvement with their growing junior section, is strengthening their connections with Kuranui College.

Football is particularly popular in Greytown with the town boasting 13 teams in the junior grade, four teams at college, three senior teams and a women's social team.
