KEY POINTS:
Prime Minister Helen Clark announced a major infrastructure project today, saying cabinet had agreed to invest $6 million in the Wiri Inland Port Rail Link project.
"This will enable Ports of Auckland to connect the Wiri Inland Port Complex to the rail network," she said.
"It benefits Auckland by reducing the number of trucking movements through the port, speeds up the processing of containers, and reduces the need for storage."
The project is undertaken in partnership with Ports of Auckland, which will meet the cost beyond the Government's $6m contribution.
The Government is bringing forward infrastructure spending to boost jobs in tough economic times.
