A hole, thought to be a mineshaft hundreds of metres deep, yesterday appeared in the middle of the main Coromandel highway, SH25, closing the road.
It appeared only a thin layer of tar was covering the shaft, a remnant of mining in the area after gold was discovered in Thames in 1867. Council workers set up detours.
