A former South Aucklander killed in a boat race in Australia has been described as a devoted family man.
John Stephen Mitchell, aged 42, formerly of Manurewa, died on Sunday during a circuit race at the National Water Sports Centre in Bangholme, Melbourne.
Mr Mitchell's brother Tony said it is appeared his speed boat had hit a wave and he was thrown into the air at about 100km/h. It is believed John, a member of the Victorian Outboard Club, died on impact.
The truck driver had moved to Melbourne in 1987 and he worked as a baker. He married his Australian wife, Sharon, in 2000 and they had Ashleigh in 2003.
"He was devoted to his wife and daughter," said his brother. "He had a big heart and he was a pussycat on the inside."
A funeral for John Mitchell is to be held in Melbourne early next week.
