The Dominion Post was named best daily newspaper (over 30,000), a category for which the Herald was a finalist, and took out the overall newspaper of the year award. Dominion Post political reporter Andrea Vance was named reporter of the year, and won the Wolfson scholarship to Cambridge.
Judges said the Weekend Herald "embraces the challenge of delivering
surprise and delight to its readers. It has the courage to throw out the rule book of how news should be presented and it sets itself apart from the standard news digest by putting the stories it wants to tell on the agenda. It is a thoroughly modern newspaper.''
The winning entries included exclusive front-page reports on the Arthur Allan
Thomas case and Auckland mayoral candidate John Palino's carpark meeting with Len Brown's former mistress; the naming of Eleanor Catton, Lydia Ko and Lorde as the New Zealanders of the Year and a special commemorative edition marking the death of Nelson Mandela.
The Herald's success, winning almost one-third of all awards on offer for newspapers and digital channels, also saw Richard Robinson declared Press Photographer of the Year and Rod Emmerson named Cartoonist of the Year for the fourth time. Anna Crichton won Best Artist.
Judge Matt Straker of The Guardian in London said the daily NZ Herald won the design award by a considerable margin. "No other entry is as compelling nor as vital. From the celebratory covers of the paper's 150th to the features covers, spread and information graphics, the paper is bursting with life. There's a strong sense you're in good hands, a sense you'll be guided to great content with clarity and confidence. It also looks like a lot of fun.''
The
Herald
also won a new award, best brand campaign, for its work around the 150th birthday celebrations.
Our head of sport, Dylan Cleaver, was named sports reporter of the year, for his world exclusive on match-fixing allegations swirling around three former New Zealand cricketers.
Other journalists honoured included Anna Leask (best crime reporter), David Fisher (best health and education reporter and best crime feature writer), Phil Taylor (best sports feature writer), Linda Herrick (best arts feature writer), and Brett Phibbs (best photo essay/slideshow). Sam Boyer, formerly of The Dominion Post but now with the Herald, was named best junior reporter.
Cameron Slater's Whaleoil website won best blog, stuff.co.nz won best online news site and Yahoo NZ won best website.
