Motocross is the same as most other sports in that those who reach the top invariably start their involvement at a young age
In Wairarapa there are a large number of. riders in the junior class 8-16yrs, ranging from novice to experienced competitors. It is the biggest class all over the country and they ride 85cc to 250cc bikes. Budding champions in this grade here include Camden Butler, Sam Guise, William Clapperton, Jared Thompson, Angus Brown and David Gordon.
The junior racers compete on senior tracks with ruts, whoops, drop offs and, of course, huge jumps. They also learn about nutrition and how to deal with the mental aspects of their sport, both very important components if success is to be achieved.
Round two of the Suzuki Magic Series which was to be held in the Hawke's Bay last Sunday was cancelled due to weather conditions but 22 Wairarapa riders travel to Foxton's Motuiti track for a day's racing. It was an excellent learning curve on a sand surface with Camden Butler, Angus Brown, Callum Moore and Sam Guise in good form in the 8-10yrs 85cc class. Also to the fore were Bjarne Fredrikson, Travis Edwards Sam Pottinger and the Dgordon brothers, Adam and David, while Scott Robinson and Jim Moore enjoyed themselves in the senior MX1.
Motocross attracts a lot of "characters" and on the local scene we have a certain fellow who is forever telling me how good he is at riding and how he is going to enter and win the national vets title. Yes, he was a good rider once but surely the time has come for Simon "Hang It Up" Butler to do that just, and let son Camden do the business!
The website www.wmcc.org.nz has been updated with coming events including the annual general meeting of the local club. Remember motocross is" mind over matter, if you don't mind pain it doesn't matter."
Big futures ahead for young riders
