A TOTAL of 16 clubs will be involved in the central region Golden Oldies Bongo rugby festival to be held at the Colombo Road grounds this weekend.
Among them are the Christchurch-based Oxford Oldies, who are believed to be the first South Island team to have played this event, and two teams from the Wairarapa, the Milhillians and the East Coast Wrinklies.
They will be joined by the Blues Brothers (Porirua), the Horowhenua Crusaders, Gangsters (Hutt), Toads (Tawa), Waggs (Wainuiomata), Yellow Bellies (Upper Hutt), Wanganui Bohemians, Taradale Sixty Niners, Bulls Steriods, Cobblers (Palmerston North)and the Kapiti Gorillas.
Two other clubs from the Manawatu will also be attending although a lack of numbers will see their players filling for other teams.
Each side contesting the tourney are guaranteed at least three games, all of which will be 20m minutes each way.
The opening games will kick off at around 10am, on Saturday following the official opening performed by former NZRFU president,All Blacks selector and Wairarapa-Bush coach Lane Penn.
Coinciding with the Goldies rugby will be a Golden Oldies netball tournament which will be competed for on the grass at the Park Sportsground.
