They were supposed to be drying out, but nine offenders on home detention got wet and wild instead during a trip to Hanmer Springs thermal pools this month.
The group was being treated for alcohol and drug addiction at Christchurch's Odyssey House.
A Corrections spokesman said the offenders were in a well supervised group that had tramped that morning, before visiting the pools. There had been no issues with offenders misbehaving on a recreation day.
