One of Auckland's premier shopping districts has recovered from a sewage disaster - but a $3 million repair bill is adding to the stink.
Metrowater's wastewater reticulation system in Parnell was mistakenly filled with concrete in November last year, and for months a foul stench lingered as sewage was diverted to other drains. The mess meant large temporary pumping stations were installed around Parnell to clear the waste, angering residents and businesses with the smell and noise.
Metrowater spokeswoman Linda Danen said repairs to the pipe system had already cost more than $1m. She said that cost would pass $2m and could reach $3m.
