KEY POINTS:
United Future leader Peter Dunne wants tax cuts tied to a compulsory saving scheme.
Mr Dunne said the business tax changes and any associated adjustments to personal tax to be announced this year could just be the beginning.
Mr Dunne told Parliament that the introduction of the Government-sponsored Kiwisaver workplace saving scheme in July could create an opportunity.
"I believe that if there is a political consensus in favour of compulsory savings at that time, we should seize the moment and make Kiwisaver a compulsory savings scheme," Mr Dunne said.
"And then, we can look to future personal tax cuts which could be significant, and over and above any tax changes in the meantime, being linked to superannuation contributions."
Mr Dunne hoped there could be public backing for the idea and also political party consensus. Two previous attempts to introduce compulsory savings were rejected.
If Labour could be persuaded to introduce compulsion it would easily have the backing of Parliament with NZ First and United Future in support. The Greens and Jim Anderton would also be likely to support such a move.
