The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association is taking the Westland District Council to the High Court in a bid to protect the rights of its members to freedom camp.
In the lead up to the Rugby World Cup councils sought to have a mechanism to deal with the worst offending freedom campers, and that's when the government introduced the Freedom Camping Act.
However the NZMCA believe the Westland District Council has gone too far and effectively imposed prohibition on freedom camping on all public land and roads within one kilometre of townships.
General manager Bruce Lochore says it's disappointing to have to take this action but they will not have the rights of their members stomped on by any council.
