A bid by businesses and tourism promoters to have Orewa called Orewa Beach has been turned down by the Geographic Board on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence of support for the change, and objections from Maori and members of the community.
But Destination Orewa chairwoman Jill Jeffs said a further bid would be made, hopefully with the backing of the Rodney District Council.
Te Hao o Ngati Whatua spokesman William Kapea said Maori were happy with the present name and he felt the suggested name change was something more akin to American culture than Maori.
