Better weather tipped this week

Auckland could be in for more wet days than usual this November, despite the worst of the weekend's bad weather disappearing for the rest of the week.

Auckland's strong winds and temperamental weather is forecast to subside and relatively fine weather is on the cards for the next five days.

Highs are expected to hover around 20C most days with some showers likely in the later part of the week.

MetService forecaster Brooke Lockhart said a high in the Tasman Sea would bring more settled weather for Auckland and up north, with a few showers expected at times.

"It's definitely a better week than this weekend."

Next weekend's weather also looked more promising with the rain forecast to keep away.

While there has been significantly less rainfall this month compared with the same period last year, the number of rain days is tracking higher. So far there have been 11 rain days this month, which is slightly higher than the long-term mean, between 1962 and 2003, of 14 rain days. The Wairarapa was the windiest place this weekend, though Auckland's winds got up to 60km/h yesterday morning before easing in the afternoon.

The storm that slammed Queensland in Australia was expected to pass to the north of New Zealand - to much less effect.
