KEY POINTS:
Most Wellington people calling their local police stations will now have their call answered at one centre. District Commander Peri Munro says it will mean a better service as it will shorten the time for calls to be answered and avoid calls bouncing from one extension to another.
He says it will also lift the work load at police watch houses where busy staff are juggling a range of duties including answering the phone. Superintendent Munro says that means they will be able to respond more quickly to public calling at the counter.
Calls to all stations except Porirua and Lower Hutt will be answered at Wellington Central.
