KEY POINTS:
A new season for recreational scallop gathering on the North Island east coast has been introduced by the Ministry of Fisheries.
The seven-month scallop season will now run from September 1 to March 31, not from July 15 to February 14 as in previous years.
The ministry says better-quality scallops can be expected with the change in seasons, which applies to recreational taking on the east coast between North Cape and Cape Runaway.
