It was a very close competition at Martinborough Golf Club on Saturday for the A.B. Martin Open Mixed Fours. Canny George Kirk, in combination with his talented daughter Philippa, won the day with best nett of 72.5 on countback from Bill Crook and Mariana McDermott, who were second on countback from Sherry Weatherston and Bob Goodley. In fourth place was Bill Jones and Helen Kirk on 73.5.
The Murray Halberg Day was played on Sunday and Trish Dallas won the women's competition on a very tidy 41 points from Kris Chamberlain, fresh back from watching the Ryder Cup, on 35 points.
The course is starting to produce a bit of run and is in tip-top order with some good scores on the board. The winner of the men's competition was Bob Tosswill with a very good score of 44 points, as did Brian Russo. Bill Jones and Peter Hudson both had 42 points, while Rick Hargreaves had fifth spot with 40 points. The recently-cored greens have settled quickly, allowing a flurry of twos from Brian Russo, Bill Jones, Ian Henderson, David Donahue and Bruce Ward.
On Wednesday, the women's 9-hole competition was won by Karen Shaw, followed by Leonie Wilde and Carole Parkinson. Honor Clark won the NTP No6, with Carol Parkinson winning the No8. No scores to report, but the 18-hole women's stableford competition had Marilyn McKenzie out in front from Jenny Wilkie in second place. Sylvia Beavis was third from Mariana McDermott, and in fifth place was Gaye Didsbury.
