KEY POINTS:
Wellington, Nov 10 NZPA - Embattled Dunedin South MP David Benson-Pope says he will not stand as an independent if he is not selected as the Labour Party's candidate in the seat.
"I'm a loyal Labour Party person," he told the Otago Daily Times.
Mr Benson-Pope said he was sure the National Party was pleased that the race for the Dunedin South seat was crowded.
Nominations closed at 5pm yesterday and at that stage, five candidate nominations had been received at the party head office in Wellington.
The official list will be announced next week.
The nominees challenging Mr Benson-Pope are: Clare Curran, communications specialist and Otago-Southland regional representative on Labour's ruling council; Olivier Lequeux, restaurateur; Don Pryde, electrical technician and Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union national president; Keith McFadyen, union organiser.
