KEY POINTS:
The future of Dunedin South MP David Benson-Pope looks less sure after reports last night that Dunedin communications and media relations specialist Clare Curran could challenge him for the Labour Party nomination for the seat.
Ms Curran is the Otago-Southland regional representative on the party's ruling council and will not take the step without the support of the party hierarchy.
She was said to be at a meeting last night and was not returning calls left on her mobile phone. Her website says she has extensive experience in media and issues management and in developing communications strategies.
She was expected to seek and receive a reasonably high place on Labour's list as the party seeks to lock out Southland list MP Lesley Soper but was understood to be keen to avoid a messy battle with Mr Benson-Pope over the electorate nomination.
The Dunedin South Labour electorate committee put up the shutters last night.
Chairman Richard Good would not speak to the Otago Daily Times newspaper and other party members - close friends and supporters of the MP - were not answering their home phones.
Mr Benson-Pope did not respond to phone calls, text messages or emails.
On Monday, his nomination was the only one received by the Dunedin South committee but his plans caused a strong reaction from Prime Minister Helen Clark.
