Volkswagen executives at the launch of the New Beetle late last year said they would be happy if sales of the born-again model totalled 200 in the year 2000.
Five months into the new millennium they are reassessing predictions. Already 212 have been sold - not counting the 25 last December - and 70 more sales are expected in June.
The car pictured, called Flower Power, is not for sale. It belongs to VW in Germany and is one of the six winning designs chosen in an Internet Beetlemania competition.
The others are Safari, Fun Sport, Space, Art and Hot Wheels.
Safari will be in Auckland and Flower Power in Christchurch for a VW promotion.
