The family of two children who were severely burned in a car fire in Gisborne last week are maintaining a bedside vigil as the pair continue to fight for their lives in hospital.
Manaia Namana-Rowe, 3, and her brother, 22-month-old Rious Namana-Rowe, remained in critical condition today, hospital spokeswomen said.
They suffered 40 per cent burns to their bodies in the blaze, which started when one of the children apparently began playing with a lighter when they were left alone in a car.
Manaia, who has undergone surgery, is in Middlemore Hospital and Rious was moved from Middlemore to Starship Children's Hospital overnight where he is in intensive care.
Their mother, Fatty Namana, is believed to be moving between the two hospitals to see her son and daughter as other family members stay with the children.
