A beauty therapist who was sacked by her aunt after being told her pregnancy would be "disgusting and repulsive" to customers has been awarded close to $25,000.
In January, the Employment Relations Authority ruled Veronica Kloeten suffered hurt, humiliation and distress when her aunt Janita Wright unjustifiably sacked her from Combined Tanning Supplies Ltd in Mt Wellington, Auckland last year.
It ordered the spray tanning specialist to pay Ms Kloeten $3000 compensation, but left the question of compensation for lost wages to be quantified by the parties.
In a decision released today, the authority ordered the company to pay Ms Kloeten $16,875 for 25 weeks' lost wages, as well as $6423 reimbursement for maternity benefits to which she had a reasonable expectation had she not been unjustifiably sacked.
She was also awarded costs of $1500.
