They have met every Tuesday night for the past seven years at pubs throughout the capital to pit their general knowledge skills against the best there, and regularly come out on top.
"Wellington's got a really competitive pub-quiz scene. Well, I heard it was anyway," said 31-year-old Angela Gore. "That doesn't mean to say Aucklanders aren't that competitive. I'm sure they are," she said. Yesterday, the team paid their own way to Auckland to defend their title as the country's best pub-quiz team against 30 other teams in The Champions Quiz.
The teams of six were given a variety of question categories which included sport, music, geography, old stuff, TV themes, television and cinema while competing for $5000 worth of prizes.
Ms Gore said a good pub-quiz team needed diversity.
Each of its members specialised in different subjects. Her expertise was trash magazines.
"Sometimes we might do a bit of study beforehand" said Rebecca Matthews, another team member.
Her specialties are music and television.
But despite winning the title for the past two years, Eddie M. Bubu's grip on the trophy was looking tenuous as they encountered a horror TV-themes round where teams had to correctly match advertising slogans with their respective companies.
"We're pretty nervous and not too sure this time around," said a grim-looking Ms Matthews.
"But this has become a tradition for us and we'll come back next year if we don't make it."
Indeed, the title went to Aucklanders The Men Who Would be Kings, from Kingsland, who pipped Eddie M. Bubu by one point with 76 correct answers out of 100 questions.
