Beacon saves injured tramper

A 44-year-old-man with an injured leg was airlifted from a remote area of the Upper Havelock River in the Southern Alps yesterday after an aircraft detected a distress beacon.

Rescue Co-ordination Centre mission controller Shailesh Raj said the rescue highlighted the importance of personal locator beacons for trampers.
