The magnificent Cape Palliser Lighthouse and the challenging walk up many steps to reach it has long been a source of fascination for visitors to South Wairarapa's coast.
On Friday, October 24, people will be able to satisfy their curiosity by being able to look inside the lighthouse, a listed historic landmark.
Maritime NZ has agreed to a request from organiser Rosemary Rayner to declare a four-hour open day for the lighthouse, starting at 10am, and everyone is welcome.
Mrs Rayner said Jim Foye, of Maritime NZ had suggested schools should be invited to make it an educational day for pupils.
"Kahutara School and Pirinoa School have jumped at the chance to bring kids along to view the inside of the lighthouse," she said.
