One man's Saturday evening on a beach, at the foot of the Coromandel Peninsula, ended in an unexpected chopper ride to hospital.
The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to Waihi, after a man, 32, suffered a "medical event that required immediate hospital care" shortly before 9pm yesterday evening.
A helicopter had been dispatched due to the nature of the medical event, and the distance by road to hospital.
Given it was past sunset, crew needed to use night vision goggles.
A spokesman for the rescue helicopter service said it was unable to divulge the exact nature of the medical event.
