KEY POINTS:
Police patrolling 40km of Muriwai Beach say they are giving out lots of advice but few tickets since new speed limits came in a month ago.
A police officer was there daily for pro-active education patrols and using discretion on issuing infringement notices where there was no safety concern," said Kumeu Community Constable Anna Crane.
"There have been some infringements for those who push the boundary and drive inappropriately.
"A few are still going too fast and will be targeted and action taken. It will take a while for the message to get through because it's a major change from what people are used to.
"But there is support from the community for positive action to increase safety for all users of the beach," said Constable Crane.
Rodney District Council brought in a new bylaw on December 1 which imposed specific speed limits for parts of the the beach applying to four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes and motocross riders.
It is 30km/h for the township side of the beach and 60km/h northwards to the bombing range, which is closed to all vehicles. Previously, motorists were allowed 50km/h adjacent to town and 100km/h to the north.
Constable Crane said it was hoped people would take the chance to learn about new rules for safe driving and riding and reducing harm to the beach dunes at an information day on Sunday.
It is being held between the Coast Rd access and the Okiriototo Stream between noon and 6pm.
Information will be given by representatives of iwi, police, district council, Auckland Regional Council, Department of Conservation, First Response, Civil Defence, Fire Service and ACC.
