A fundraising barbecue on Waiheke Island tomorrow will help to buy a new rescue helicopter.
The Auckland Rescue Helicopter Foundation is putting on the RESQBBQ, which will include 5000 barbecued sausages - courtesy of the Mad Butcher - children's rides and music at Onetangi Sports Park.
Proceeds will go towards the $7 million price tag for a replacement rescue helicopter.
Paul Holmes will be the master of ceremonies and many members of the New Zealand Warriors team are expected to attend the event which starts at 10am.
Ferry operators Fullers and Sealink will provide transport from their arrival points at Waiheke Island to the park.
The RESQBBQ campaign, launched in November, encouraged Aucklanders to host barbecues and encourage those who attended to donate to the cause.
It has been active over summer with sports clubs, community groups and companies contributing.
Saatchi & Saatchi's effort has so far raised the most money at a single event - $37,000.
"The RESQBBQ campaign is proving to be a summer hit with community and corporate groups," said foundation chairwoman Michelle Boag.
"We have been really pleased with the results, and are proud of the organisations that have got on board to help us out."
The foundation was established by the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, operators of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. They hope to buy the helicopter this year.
